Harvesting Water is the theme for our Bishop's Harvest Appeal this year and schools were  encouraged to look at the ways in whcih different areas of the world are affected by the amount of water they have.

One such area is Bangladesh where they have floods which could wipe out crops. Their solution is to build floating gardens. These are rafts made from bamboo on which crops are grown. It was suggested that children might like to have a go at making their own, on a much smaller scale.

One school which took up the challenge was St Nicholas School in Blackpool. The Head Teacher, Andrew Mellor said "The children had a great time and it covered RE, PSHCE, Geography, DT and so many other areas. The children had to find the materials in the school grounds to make the first rafts which made them realise how difficult it is."

The photographs are ones which have been worked on at home because they were so inspired. It has really caught their imagination and they very clearly understand the issues!!!"
