Primary Head Teachers Twilight Meetings 2017/2018

For Head Teachers of Primary Schools and Academies in Blackburn Diocese.

These meetings will be repeated at four venues across the diocese. Please book into whichever venue is most convenient. This is an opportunity to keep up to date with current issues from the diocese and across the wider world of education as they affect church schools and academies.
Each meeting will begin at 4.00pm and end by 5.30pm

Headteachers and Incumbents Day Conference

Wednesday 7th March 2018 9.30am – 3.30pm

Venue: The Abbey Suite, Mytton Fold Hotel, Langho BB6 8AB

Cost:  £165 per school.  for schools who pay into the diocesan family of Schools SLA. The cost covers up to two places (one headteacher and one incumbent).

This conference is for headteachers of our church schools and the Incumbent, curate or associated priest.

During the morning we will explore and unpack question 1 from the new SIAMS framework with particular focus on ‘To what extent is the school’s vision and its associated values grounded  in a clear theology firmly rooted in a christian narrative.’

The afternoon will be an opportunity to look at creative and innovative ways school and church can work together, including football!

This half day conference is designed to explain all about capital building projects, from the use of consultants and what schools should expect from them, to how the LCVAP process and funding works, and where DFC, Barchester and Governor contributions all fit in.  We’ll discuss what schools can expect from being a member of the Building SLA Group, what Governor Responsibilities are for buildings, and where to turn to information, advice and guidance.
This course is suitable for Heads and Chairs of Governors/Chair of Buildings Committee particularly of VA Schools.

Moving Towards Leadership

  • reflect on why they want to lead, particularly in a church school.
  • consider the key elements of a ‘good’ application
  • review their draft application, if you have one, with a view to writing a model application
  • review their leadership strengths and identify areas for development
  • identify how skills gaps can be plugged

Session 2 will focus on

  • getting the most from the school visit, pre-interview.
  • preparing for all aspects of the interview process.

This two hour twilight session is aimed at teachers and senior leaders, currently working in Community Schools, who may be considering applying for leadership positions in a Church School. This session will provide participants with an opportunity to:

  • Understand the differences between Church Schools and Community Schools;
  • Consider the key elements of the application and interview processes;
  • Identify the support available to Senior Leaders from the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education.

  • Understand the statutory requirements in relation to promoting/teaching British Values
  • appreciate the difference between British values and Christian Values
  • understand the theological background to Christian Values
  • consider how promoting Christian Values can be used to support the promotion of British Values
  • review your school’s current practice in terms f progressing Christian Values and British Values
  • share effective practice
  • explore how promoting Christian and British values can also support delivery of the key pillars of the Church of the England’s Vision for Education.

Developing Outdoor Prayer Areas

  • assess the potential for developing outdoor prayer areas in their school
  • hear what other schools have done to create and maximise the impact of outdoor prayer areas
  • explore how outdoor prayer areas can be used to support the RE Curriculum

Induction Course for new Head Teachers and new Deputy Headteachers

An introduction to leadership in a Church if England/Methodist Primary School within Blackburn Diocese
This course is free to schools who pay into the diocesan family of schools SLA. For non members the cost is £85 per person per session,

The programme, consisting of two day conferences and 3 morning sessions will provide professional support for newly appointed head teachers and deputy headteachers within a church school. The programme is led by members of the Diocesan Board of Education team.

Induction Course for Newly Qualified Teachers or teachers new to Church Schools

The three sessions aim to deepen participants’ understanding of the distinctive nature of a church school in the areas of values, collective worship, religious education and children’s spiritual development. It is expected that the participants will attend all three sessions, however booking for individual sessions can be made. The programme will be led by Lisa Horobin.

This course is free to schools who pay into the diocesan family of schools (SLA). For non-members the cost is £45 per person per session

Primary RE Cluster Meetings

Primary RE Cluster meetings are for RE Coordinators and those with responsibility for RE. These meetings are informal gatherings where resources, updates, training and good ideas are shared. These meetings will be led by outstanding experienced RE co-ordinators. Lisa Horobin will also attend one cluster meeting at each venue during the academic year as noted below. These meetings are free to schools who pay into the Blackburn Diocesan Family of Schools (SLA). £25 per person for all others.
