SUPPORTING ENGAGEMENT, INSPIRING CHANGE

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an

example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12

About us

Who we are:

We are a group of young people aged between 14-18 years from churches and schools across Blackburn Diocese who, through support and connection to the Board of Education, work together to champion the voice of young people across Lancashire. Members of the Diocesan Youth Council (DYC) serve as members of the Youth Committee and Directors on the Board of Education.

Council members’ hopes…

‘My hope for the youth council is to help bring young people closer to God and strengthen their faith through serving in church.’

Becky

‘I hope my passion for my faith and leadership can help shape the way that young people view the church and inspire others to join our mission!’

Natasha

‘My hope for the DYC is for us to reach out and connect to all churches, engaging with their young people, strengthening bonds, faith and love for Christ.’

Tyler

What we do:
We meet six times a year, more if needed, and aim to:

  • raise awareness of different youth cultures and how these might be harnessed by parishes.
  • collate and discuss the key issues affecting young people across the Diocese.
  • act as an advisory body for the Board of Education on matters relating to youth work in churches.
  • act as an advisory body for the Diocese on new initiatives and their impact on young people in parishes.
  • support churches in creating youth accessible worship.
  • support churches in developing youth voice at parish level.
  • create and assess an approval system for churches similar to the Child Friendly Church award.
  • ensure the long-term sustainability of the council, seeking to ensure a balance of membership from across the Diocese.

The members of the DYC, through the Director of Education, input into the following bodies as appropriate: Bishop’s Leadership Team, Bishop’s Council and Diocesan Synod.

Young People Friendly Church Award

One initiative we are working on at the moment is the development of a ‘Young People Friendly Church Award’, following a similar idea to the ‘Child Friendly Church Award’ run in Blackburn Diocese. We are seeking to award parishes who have a vision for providing contextually appropriate, accessible and engaging provisions for young people and whose worship reflects this also. Members of the DYC would visit a parish within a month of receiving an application from them, and with the support of the Diocesan Youth Adviser, offer training and assistance in continuing on with their vision for young people’s provision.

As we say, this is under development, so please return here over the coming months for updates as to how we are getting on, and how parishes can apply for the award.

What are we working on?

We recently had an away day when we discussed much of what we are aiming to do over the next twelve months. This included how we let you know what we are up to – hence this little section on our webpage – how we introduce ourselves to you all, and what initiatives we feel are the priority for us to focus on.
