Christian Leadership Pathways 2018-2019

Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education in conjunction with colleagues from our neighbouring North West Anglican Dioceses run the extremely popular Christian Leadership Course.

in response to the ever-increasing demand for courses on church school leadership, the North West Dioceses, in conjunction with Liverpool Hope University, are pleased to offer a bespoke Middle Leaders Courses for colleagues in Church Schools. Primary Head Teachers Meetings 2018/2019

For Head Teachers of Primary Schools and Academies in Blackburn Diocese.

These meetings will be repeated at four venues across the diocese. In the Autumn Term the meetings will be held at 4.00pm – 5.30pm and in the Spring term they will be breakfast meetings beginning with a celebration of the Eucharist at 8.00am, these meetings will finish by 10.30am  there will be no meetings in the Summer Term.

These meetings are free to schools who pay into the diocesan family of schools (SLA). For non-members the cost is £45 per person.

Induction Course for new Head Teachers and new Deputy Headteachers

An introduction to leadership in a Church if England/Methodist Primary School within Blackburn Diocese
This course is free to schools who pay into the diocesan family of schools SLA. For non members the cost is £85 per person per session,

The programme, consisting of two day conferences and 3 morning sessions will provide professional support for newly appointed head teachers and deputy headteachers within a church school. The programme is led by members of the Diocesan Board of Education team.

Induction Course for Newly Qualified Teachers or teachers new to Church Schools

The three sessions aim to deepen participants’ understanding of the distinctive nature of a church school in the areas of values, collective worship, religious education and children’s spiritual development. It is expected that the participants will attend all three sessions, however booking for individual sessions can be made. The programme will be led by Lisa Horobin.

This course is free to schools who pay into the diocesan family of schools (SLA). For non-members the cost is £45 per person per session

Moving Towards Leadership

This is for Deputy Headteachers considering applying for Headship, and teachers applying for Senior Leadership posts.

Dates: Session 1: Monday 28th January 2019 and Session 2: Wednesday 6th March 2019 both sessions 4.15pm – 6.30pm

Venue: Diocesan Offices, Clayton House, Walker Office Park. Blackburn BB1 2QE

The cost of this twilight is £45 per person per session for schools who pay into the Diocesan Family of schools SLA.

Session 1 will provide participants with the opportunity to:
• Reflect on why they want to lead, particularly in a Church School;
• Consider the key elements of a ‘good’ application;
• Review their draft application, if you have one, with a view to writing a model application;
• Review their leadership strengths and identify areas for development;
• Identify how skills gaps can be ‘plugged’.

Session 2 will focus on:
• Getting the most from the school visit, pre-interview;
• Preparing for all aspects of the interview process.

Developing Multi Faith and Multi Cultural Education

Developing Creative Approaches to Collective Worship for Easter

Collective worship should be at the heart of daily life in our Church schools and a key part of the development of a school’s Christian vision

It has the potential to provide opportunities for adults and children to experience Christian worship, which will enable them to grow in their spiritual lives and develop further their understanding of faith (see SIAMS framework, Strand 6)

This course will provide practical ideas for participants to use in planning and preparing for creative, innovative and inspiring Easter worship in school

Aims of the course

To enable participants to:

  • identify key aspects of effective worship
  • focus upon the development of new opportunities and broader experiences, enhanced by creative approaches through art and music
  • plan to widen the impact of collective worship upon the school community
  • develop awareness of a range of stimulating resources and ideas
  • continue and apply the ideas provided during this course

‘Godly Play’ CPD

‘Godly Play’ is a method of Christian Bible storytelling that aims to develop childhood spirituality, by creating sacred places, developing a deeper understanding of religious language, symbols and rites and preparing children to join in the worship and life of their faith community.

It is hoped that this half-day course will provide participants with the opportunity to:
• Understand the principles of ‘Godly Play’;
• Experience some of the ‘Godly Play’ activities;
• Access a range of ‘Godly Play’ resources;
• Consider how to use these activities and resources in your school.

You will have the opportunity to update your existing church school SEF in line with the new SIAMS Schedule. This half day conference is designed to explain all about capital building projects, from the use of consultants and what schools should expect from them, to how the LCVAP process and funding works, and where DFC, Barchester and Governor contributions all fit in.  We’ll discuss what schools can expect from being a member of the Building SLA Group, what Governor Responsibilities are for buildings, and where to turn to information, advice and guidance.
This course is suitable for Heads and Chairs of Governors/Chair of Buildings Committee particularly of VA Schools.

Year 6 Leavers Celebration Service

Dates:  Tuesday 9th July 2019 (Fully Booked)

Venue: Blackburn Cathedral
Time: 10.00am – 11.30am

A service for all Year 6 pupils to celebrate their time at primary school and encourage them as they journey on to high school.

The format of the celebration will be decided when numbers are known, but it will be a time of lively and exuberant praise and celebration. The idea of having a giant picnic together after the service has also been suggested. More details will be sent in the summer term to all schools who book.

Both celebrations are now fully booked. Perhaps next year we will do three!

Primary RE Cluster Meetings

Primary RE Cluster meetings are for RE Coordinators and those with responsibility for RE. These meetings are informal gatherings where resources, updates, training and good ideas are shared. These meetings will be led by outstanding experienced RE co-ordinators. Lisa Horobin will also attend one cluster meeting at each venue during the academic year as noted below. These meetings are free to schools who pay into the Blackburn Diocesan Family of Schools (SLA). £25 per person for all others.
